Moodboarding 101

Moodboarding: a simple practice for setting tone, visualizing goals, and getting inspired.

Tell me: when you were in high school, did you ever cut out pictures from magazines and tape them to your book covers? This was OG moodboarding, and I’ve been doing it since 6th grade. Pretty hip, huh?

WHY MOODBOARD?

Not only is the outcome a custom piece of art that speaks directly to you, but the process of moodboarding can be a cathartic exercise that helps you sort through your feelings on the inside in order to fully visualize and embrace them on the outside. It’s a form of self-care and personal development all wrapped into one activity!

HOW DO YOU CREATE A MOODBOARD?

You may have also heard of this referred to as “visioning” or creating a vision board. The general framework is the same: collect imagery, quotes, and/or objects that are meaningful to you, speak to you, or help you visualize the tone of your life at present, and arrange them on a surface that you will see every single day.

I set a personal goal to create a moodboard every season – mine is a 36” x 36” linen-covered corkboard that hangs in my home office, so typically I blend inspiration for what projects I’m tackling at work, anything I’m freelancing at the moment, and visuals that are meaningful to my current personal life.

HOW TO: SOURCE IMAGERY

I source my imagery from unsplash and pinterest, as well as design some of my own. I then print off all the imagery on my printer and cut down to size – typically 3x3” / 4x6” / 5x7” sizes.
